Touring Tolland's Old North Cemetery
With Ruth Shapleigh-Brown of Connecticut's Graveyard Network

May, 2010

Ruth began her talk by giving an overview of stone types common to the graveyard. Schist, (most of which came from the Bolton quarry), and sandstone are very common.
According to Ruth, many of the schist stones were carved by the Loomis carvers of Coventry.

The Loomis carvers used urns and willows in their symbolism. This represented a person's passing as a "peaceful reward for the deceased but a mournful time for those they have left behind."

The gravestone for John Aborn is also made from Bolton schist.

Aborn was killed by lightning
in 1768.
The stone was carved by Gershom Bartlett, one of the earliest stone carvers in eastern Connecticut.

The term "consort to" means that John predeceased his wife, Dorcas.

An interesting marker made of sandstone in memory of three children who died on he same day.
